Prairie Rattlesnakes Fighting !
These are a set of 5 images of 2 prairie rattlesnakes fighting!
I came upon these 2 snakes in July 2005, it was a very hot day 35c. Snakes in our area are on the move on these kind of days and I was looking to get a photo of a rattler this day,and this day I will never forget! It was amazing!
I noticed 2 heads bobbing out of a rye swath, I immediately pulled over and proceeded to take pictures .These 2 snakes were twisted up,standing up to 1/2 of their body length at times and pulling each other to the ground and repeated this over and over for 20 minutes,as I took pictures I was kneeling and I remember having the 2 snakes at eye level with me at times(this is how much of their body was upright) I was able to get fairly close as they were pre occupied with each other they were not too concerned that I was taking their pictures, but I respected their unpredictable behavior and kept a safe distance. They just continued to wrestle with each other pulling each other to the ground,1 snake was a little larger than the other and was clearly the stronger one. They never made any attempt to rattle, nor did they try to bite each other. The smaller snake of the 2 was bleeding from under the front of the body ,looks like it was just rubbed raw from the other snakes scales. They battled until the smaller snake was just too tired to raise its body off the ground anymore, they separated and the smaller of the 2 slept it off under a swath as the larger one headed down a mole hill.
At the time I wasn't too sure what these two were doing ,however talking with different biologist and showing them my collection of over 150 photos of the event ,they concluded that even though this is similar to what rattlers do when matting, the elevated upright behavior is more evident when 2 males are fighting. It is said that they will fight over a food source, territory or if a female is in the area ( I sure wasn't looking for a 3rd snake that day!) Yikes!
These are sold as set of 5 only for $100.00
They are all 5x7 in size, they come framed in a 5x7 with glass.
